Tree Care Tips to Avoid Costly Damage

Entropy is the natural direction of things. Left alone, everything tends to drift toward disorder – and your yard is no exception.

secondary

Picture a forest untouched by human hands: vines tangled around tree trunks, branches crossing wildly, and fallen leaves carpeting the ground while insects and decay do their work. It’s beautiful in its own wild way.

We love forests as much as the next person, but it’s not exactly the environment you want surrounding your home. We prefer the calculated safety of a well-maintained yard when our property and safety is at stake.

So, how do you keep your trees healthy, safe, and orderly? In this brief article brought to you by Driscoll Tree Service, we offer our two cents. If you’re looking for a reputable tree company with decades of industry experience, then consider Driscoll.

TIP 1: Keep an Eye on Growth Patterns

Trees grow slowly, and this makes it easy to forget that they’re constantly changing. One day, a branch is above your roofline; the next time you look, it’s brushing against your shingles. Those slow shifts can lead to damage over time.

Take a walk around your property at least twice a year, and note where trees might be encroaching on structures, fences, or power lines. If you spot branches getting too close for comfort, then it’s time to trim things back to safety.

TIP 2: Don’t Ignore Weak or Dead Branches

Deadwood is more than an eyesore; it’s also a safety hazard. A weak or dead limb can come crashing down with little warning. Many won’t make it through heavy rain or strong winds. Georgia storms have a way of reminding us just how powerful nature can be.

If you notice brittle and/or leafless branches or sections that seem hollow, then have an arborist investigate. Removing problematic limbs early is far cheaper (and safer) than waiting for nature to do it for you.

TIP 3: Watch the Roots

Roots are the foundation of your tree. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t pay attention to what’s happening underground.

If you see soil lifting near a tree’s base, exposed roots, or mushrooms growing nearby, then you’re looking at early signs of root stress or rot.

Roots can also threaten the foundation of your building or driveway. Roots that extend under driveways or foundations can cause structural damage if left unchecked. Plumbing lines are also at risk.

TIP 4: Be Mindful of Watering and Drainage

Thankfully, we get plenty of rain here in Georgia. The not-so-good news is that it’s not always evenly. Periods of drought followed by heavy storms can stress trees and cause shallow root systems or fungal growth. Make sure drainage is effective and maintained.

If you water your lawn regularly, then make sure your trees are getting the right amount. Young trees, for instance, need consistent deep watering during dry spells. However, avoid water pooling near trunks; that’s a recipe for rot and disease.

TIP 5: Schedule Regular Maintenance

Like a car or a roof, trees need routine maintenance to stay safe and reliable. Periodic tree service in Auburn, GA can help identify disease, pest activity, and structural weakness before they escalate into massive headaches.

BONUS: Know When to Ask for Help

secondary

Some homeowners love taking care of their own trees, shrubs, and garden. But when it comes to trimming large limbs, diagnosing disease, or handling storm-damaged trees, then you’re better off leaving it to the pros.

Moreover, their expertise and experience offers insight you might overlook. For instance, what you think can be fixed with some stakes and bracing might actually need an emergency tree removal.
