I had a large oak tree taken down near power lines and an outdoor kitchen. I was well informed about the work they were going to do and how long it should take. The team was professional, fast and dropped the tree safely. They used a bucket truck and climber to trim branches from the top half of the tree with no damage to the yard around the tree.  I am extremely pleased with Driscoll Tree service work.

How Tree Roots Damage Foundations and Pipes

Trees are magnificent, green giants that provide many benefits to our landscapes and the environment. However, some species have extensive root systems that grow too close to your building and plumbing infrastructure. If left unchecked, roots can cause severe damage to underground pipes and compromise the structural integrity of surrounding structures. That’s where Driscoll Tree Services comes in as the go-to tree company for tailored solutions that preserve curb appeal and functionality. Our certified arborists leverage extensive expertise and advanced diagnostic equipment to pinpoint the damage, assess the severity, and determine whether pruning or full tree removal is necessary.

How Tree Roots Affect Your Foundation

secondary

If you have mature trees in your yard, knowing the risks they pose to your home or business is key to preventing devastating damage. Here’s how tree roots can affect your foundation.

Soil Displacement and Foundation Shifting

Tree roots seek ital. nutrients and moisture, often spreading beyond the canopy. Over time, growing roots displace soil around your foundation, causing the ground to shift and settlement issues like cracked walls, uneven floors, and structural instability. Additionally, roots absorb water from the soil, causing the ground around your home to be unstable due to shrinking soil particles. Routine inspections by a licensed tree service provider can help you catch signs of root damage early and implement preventive strategies

Increased Water Accumulation

A lesser-known danger of tree roots to residential and commercial properties is drainage damage. Roots can infiltrate underground lines, causing clogs and damage. When this happens, wastewater can’t flow smoothly into the main sewer line or septic system, leading to pooling around the foundation. If the problem is not resolved, excess water can weaken the foundation and increase the risk of basement flooding.

Cracks and Intrusion

Although tree roots don’t directly break concrete, they can exploit existing weak spots. Tree roots can penetrate through small cracks in search of water and nutrients. The impact may not be instantaneous, but the long-term impact can be catastrophic. Tree roots expand and widen cracks, allowing water to seep into your crawlspaces or basement.

How Tree Roots Impact Your Pipes

Now that you know how tree roots can damage your home or business, you can take a more proactive approach toward tree service. Let’s delve into the impact of overgrown roots on your plumbing lines.

Clogging Underground Pipes

Roots are programmed to search for moisture, making underground water and drainage pipes a target. Over time, cracks and loose connections can allow roots to infiltrate the pipes and grow inside them. This blockage not only causes water to back up but also leads to oversaturated soil and potential basement leaks. If you suspect clogged pipes or deal with recurring problems, call a local tree company to determine the cause and recommend effective solutions to restore smooth flow.

Damaging Sewer and Septic Systems

In addition to drainage lines, roots often invade septic systems and sewer lines. Wastewater contains high nutrient levels and water, which are vital for healthy growth. Once roots invade these pipes, they grow and create obstructions that lead to slow drains, sewage backups, and even premature tree removal. If you experience frequent plumbing issues that cost a fortune to fix, tree root intrusion may be the problem.

While tree roots play a crucial role in the stability and health of trees, their impact on nearby structures is not something you can overlook. Tree roots are constantly searching for moisture, putting immense pressure on your foundation and plumbing pipes.
