The service for Driscoll Tree Service was outstanding. Michael came out to meet with me, explained the pros and cons of how to deal with my tree removal, and provided a clear quote for the service. The crew that came out to do the work was on-time, professional and did a great job. One of the trees they had to remove was tall and in a spot where they couldn't get any heavy equipment to it, but they were able to take it down in pieces without damaging my landscaping or fence. If you are looking for a professional and competent tree service,  I definitely recommend calling Driscoll Tree Service.

What Questions Should I Ask a Tree Service Company?

Mature trees do more than make a yard look good. They also provide shade, improve air quality, and in some cases even produce fruit. They can also boost property value by as much as 3 to 15 percent. In short, trees are valuable, living fixtures.

But when a tree becomes unstable, diseased, or poorly maintained, it shifts from asset to liability. That’s why smart property owners stay proactive. The good news? You don’t have to climb a ladder or sharpen a pair of shears. You can hire professionals. The key is choosing the right ones.

Before hiring a tree company, make sure to ask the right questions. In this brief article brought to you by Driscoll Tree Service, we highlight some inquiries that can protect your property, your wallet, and your peace of mind.

Question: Are You Licensed and Insured?

This should always be your first question. Tree work is dangerous, and accidents can happen… even with experienced crews.

A reputable tree service provider should carry general liability insurance to cover property damage AND workers’ compensation to cover employees. Without proper coverage, you could be held financially responsible for accidents on your property.

It’s not enough for them to say they are licensed and insured, though. A trustworthy company will be happy to show you proof. If they hesitate to provide it, then you’ve got yourself a red flag.

Question: What Experience Do You Have?

secondary

Removing a small ornamental tree is very different from handling a large oak near a home, so remember to ask questions like:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you have experience with this type of work?
  • Can you provide references or examples?

Experience matters as much as expertise, especially when the job involves complex pruning or tree removal near homes and structures.

Question: What Services Do You Recommend – and Why?

A trustworthy tree service provider won’t just jump straight to cutting. They assess the tree and explain your options, and they’re happy to address questions. So, ask them to walk you through:

  • The condition of the tree
  • Whether it can be saved
  • Why they recommend pruning, treatment, or removal

If their first and only suggestion is a tree removal without explanation, then consider getting a second opinion.

Question: What Equipment Will You Use?

Professional tree work requires more than basic tools. Ask what equipment they plan to use and how they’ll approach the job. Look for answers that include:

  • Rigging systems for controlled cuts
  • Safety gear and protective equipment
  • Specialized machinery for larger jobs

Question: How Will You Protect My Property?

Tree work can impact more than just the tree itself. Ask how the crew plans to protect your home, landscaping, and surrounding structures. For example:

  • Will they use drop zones or rigging to control falling limbs?
  • How will they avoid damaging lawns or garden beds?
  • What happens if something goes wrong?

An honest tree company should have clear answers and a plan in place.

Question: Can You Provide a Written Estimate?

Never rely on a verbal quote. A written estimate helps prevent surprises and arguments later. Your estimate should outline the scope of the work, timeline, total cost, and any additional services. Clear communication and upfront pricing are signs of a reliable company.

Make the Smart Choice

Hiring a tree professional isn’t just about getting the job done; it’s also about getting it done right. Asking the right questions helps you avoid costly mistakes and provides that your trees are handled with care.

If you’re looking for a local company with decades of industry experience, then consider the pros at Driscoll Tree Service. Call or message us today to consult with a member of our office team. We’re happy to address any questions or concerns you may have.
