Michael came out to evaluate some trees I had with a questionable fungus on them, and ultimately the course of action was removal for a select few. He got me an estimate for the removal within a matter of days. They had the most competitive prices out of the other estimates I got. Michael is a very knowledgeable Arborist and you can tell he is passionate about his work. He wasn't pushy at all about the removal like some of the other companies I had come out, and he advised me on doing it in "phases" to fit my budget. The actual tree removal and stump grinding itself was so smooth and all the workers that came with the crane and stump service were very professional and communicative about what the process was going to be.

This is the second time using Driscoll, and we are pleased with the service. Michael is knowledgeable and punctual. We had eight trees trimmed, and they left no traces of the work in our yard. Polite workers. Reasonably priced as well. Highly recommend.

Trees are a major part of our landscape and lifestyle in Metro Atlanta and the surrounding areas. They provide shade, boost curb appeal, and even raise property value. But like anything else on your property, they need regular care. Tree trimming is one of these maintenance tasks that cannot be overlooked.

But trees come in all shapes and sizes, and how often to trim them isn’t always obvious. Whether you’ve got a sprawling oak shading your front yard or a crepe myrtle beautifying your driveway, understanding when and how often to schedule tree trimming is essential.

If you're scratching your head over how to keep your trees healthy, beautiful, and where it belongs, then this guide is for you. In this brief article brought to you by Driscoll Tree Service, we give you our two cents on what you need to know about tree trimming in Georgia - and how often you should call in the pros.

Why Tree Trimming Matters

Regular trimming isn’t just about appearances. It also:

  • Prevents dead or weak limbs from falling during storms
  • Encourages healthy growth and structure
  • Reduces risk of disease and pests
  • Keeps limbs away from homes, power lines, and driveways
  • Makes trees more resilient to Georgia’s hot summers and surprise weather events

And when trimming is neglected? Trees can become hazardous, messy, and expensive to fix. Don't wait until a tree removal is your only option. Routine tree service is integral.

How Often Should You Trim?

secondary

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but general rules of thumb include:

  • Every 1–3 years for most mature shade trees
  • Annually or biannually for ornamental trees or fast-growing species
  • Seasonally, in certain cases (more on that below)

With that said, it's worth visualizing a generic tree trimming calendar:

  • Winter (Dec-Feb): This is an ideal time for most pruning jobs, especially for oak, maple, and other deciduous trees. Since there's less sap flow, you'll deal with fewer pests.
  • Spring (Mar-May): Do NOT stress trees during active growth in the Spring. Remove broken limbs from winter storms and perform light trimming ONLY.
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Palm and pines are typically serviced in these times, and many people trim for safety and clearance. If you're going to trim, then watch for signs of heat stress or pests.
  • Fall (Sep-Nov): Trees are generally preparing for dormancy, so avoid major cuts. Light shaping only.

Tree Trimming Myths to Recognize

To be clear, the information on this page is general and it's always advisable to consult an arborist before action. There are many misconceptions - big or small. Here are some myths we hear all the time:

  • "Trimming in summer is bad for the tree." Not always... While major pruning is best in winter, light trimming can be done year-round to manage safety issues or clear growth from structures.
  • "Topping trees helps them grow back faster." False. Topping (AKA removing the top of a tree) puts stress on the tree and leads to weak regrowth. Proper structural pruning by a professional tree company is much healthier.
  • "All trees need trimming every year." Not true. Trimming too often can weaken the tree. It’s best to assess your specific trees with help from a qualified tree service provider.

Leave the Trimming to the Pros

Climbing ladders with chainsaws or trying to shape a tree without training is a recipe for disaster - think injury, property damage, and long-term damage to your trees. Countless Metro Atlanta residents trust Driscoll Tree Service, a licensed and insured tree company with decades of experience.

Our uniformed crews are trained to know how much to trim and when to do it. Whether you’re looking to restore a prized oak, tame an overgrown ornamental, or prevent future storm damage, we’re here to help - with transparent pricing and a dedication to doing the job right the first time.
