Our Reviews

This is the second time using Driscoll, and we are pleased with the service. Michael is knowledgeable and punctual. We had eight trees trimmed, and they left no traces of the work in our yard. Polite workers. Reasonably priced as well. Highly recommend.

I was very impressed with how quickly and professionally they worked. They were in and out in an afternoon. They had to remove a giant Red Oak, and did so with great skill and speed. Their price is very affordable and beats out most of the competition around. I highly recommend Driscoll Tree Service. We will use them again for all of our future tree removal needs! Seriously, give them a call. They are awesome!

Summer is winding down, the days are getting shorter, and the air will be crisp and the leaves will start falling before you know it. For tree owners, that means it’s time to think ahead. Fall is one of the best seasons to give your trees a little attention so they stay healthy, safe, and beautiful year after year.

But here’s the thing: how do you know whether your tree needs a light trim, a more detailed prune, or even a full tree removal? In this brief article brought to you by Driscoll Tree Service, we break it down in a way that makes sense. If you'd rather bring in experts, then contact Driscoll to hire a trained and uniformed professional.

Trimming vs. Pruning: What’s the Difference?

A lot of people use the words "trimming" and "pruning" like they’re the same thing. To be fair, they’re similar... but they're not identical.

  • Tree trimming is more about appearance and safety. It’s like giving your tree a haircut. You'll be removing overgrown branches, shaping it, and keeping it from blocking driveways, walkways, or hanging too close to your roof.
  • Tree pruning is about the health of the tree. It involves cutting away dead, diseased, or crossing branches so the tree can grow stronger and live longer.

Think of trimming as grooming, and pruning as preventive healthcare. Both are important - and fall is a great time to do either.

When to Trim in Preparation for Fall

secondary

If your tree is healthy but a little messy, then tree trimming is usually all you need. Pull out the shears or call a tree company for a trimming if you notice:

  • Branches are brushing against your house or hanging low over your car.
  • The tree looks lopsided or unbalanced.
  • Dense growth is blocking sunlight from reaching your lawn or garden.
  • It’s been more than a year or two since the last trim.

Trimming in the fall is especially helpful because it gets your tree ready for winter storms. Ice and wind are less likely to break branches if the tree has been properly shaped and thinned out.

When to Prune in Preparation for Fall

Pruning is a little more targeted and should be done when you notice problems that could harm the tree. Here are some signs it’s time to prune:

  • Dead or broken branches hanging in the canopy.
  • Branches rubbing against each other (which can cause wounds and invite pests).
  • Signs of disease (like black spots, unusual growths, or bare sections).
  • Small "suckers" or sprouts growing from the base of the trunk.

In Georgia and the Southeast, late fall is an excellent time for pruning because many trees are heading into dormancy. With less sap flowing and fewer active pests, the cuts heal better and faster.

When Tree Removal Becomes Necessary

Nobody - certainly at Driscoll - likes the idea of cutting down a tree. But it’s sometimes the safest and smartest choice. Ignoring a dangerous or dying tree can lead to property damage - or even personal injury or worse. It's probably time to consider a removal if:

  • The tree leans heavily to one side... especially if the lean is new.
  • You see large cracks or cavities in the trunk.
  • More than half the tree’s canopy is dead or bare.
  • Roots are lifting sidewalks, driveways, or even your foundation.
  • The tree has been severely damaged by storms.

Remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry. If you're not sure, then contact Driscoll Tree Service to have a tree service professional investigate.

Why Fall is the Perfect Season for Tree Work

It's not just about raking leaves. Fall is actually one of the best times for tree care. Here's why:

  • The cooler weather makes it easier on the tree (and on the crew doing the work!).
  • Trees are starting to slow down for winter. This means they can handle pruning without stress.
  • Preparing in fall reduces risks associated with heavy winter weather (like ice, snow, or wind).

If you want to get ahead of the curve, then call or message Driscoll Tree Service to speak with a live representative. We're happy to address questions or concerns, schedule an appointment, or arrange an urgent dispatch for as soon as possible.
